The Year of Saint Joseph
Patron of the Universal Church
POPE FRANCIS PROCLAIMS "YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH"
With the Apostolic Letter “Patris corde” (“With a Father’s Heart”), Pope Francis recalls the 150th anniversary of the declaration of Saint Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. To mark the occasion, the Holy Father has proclaimed a “Year of Saint Joseph” from December 8, 2020, to December 8, 2021. "We need only ask Saint Joseph for the grace of graces: our conversion. Let us now make our prayer to him: Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son; in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man. Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage, and defend us from every evil. Amen." Given in Rome, at Saint John Lateran, on 8 December, Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the year 2020, the eighth of my Pontificate. |

![]() THE OFFICIAL YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH PRAYER
To you, O blessed Joseph, do we come in our afflictions, and having implored the help of your most holy Spouse, we confidently invoke your patronage also. Through that charity which bound you to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God and through the paternal love with which you embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood, and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities. O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ; O most loving father, ward off from us every contagion of error and corrupting influence; O our most mighty protector, be kind to us and from heaven assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness. As once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now protect God’s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity; shield, too, each one of us by your constant protection, so that, supported by your example and your aid, we may be able to live piously, to die in holiness, and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven. Amen. |
Who We Are
Cathedral and Parish
As the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Hartford, this beautiful church is the place where the local Archbishop presides over services attended by Catholics from throughout the Archdiocese. The Cathedral is also a parish in its own right, serving Catholics living in the Asylum Hill section of Hartford and in surrounding areas.
We are blessed with a beautiful environment for worship, one which features a superb four manual Austin pipe organ, exquisite stained glass windows crafted in Paris, and a ceramic tile mural behind the altar that is the largest of its kind in the world. Even more importantly, the Cathedral parish, which includes parishioners born on every continent in the world, is a vital one offering many activities, a place where sacred music and social outreach play significant roles.

FEAST OF ST BLASÉ
Saint Blaise served as a bishop of Armenia in the fourth century. Little is known about his life, but tradition tells us that he saved a small boy from choking on a fish bone. Because of this, his help is sought for those who are sick, especially those afflicted with illnesses of the throat. The church continues its ministry to the sick with the blessing of throats on his feast day February 3rd.
The traditional Blessing of throats will take place after both the 7:30 and 12:10 Masses on Wednesday, February 3rd. This year, however, because of COVID restrictions, and our need for social distancing, it will be done as a general blessing from the sanctuary for the entire congregation.

Sunday Mass Dispensation Extended to February 16, 2021
The Cathedral of Saint Joseph recognizes the financial stress that many of our parishioners are facing at this time. However, for those who are able, we are counting on your sustained support so that we may continue our important ministries and work of our dedicated employees who are still currently offering their talents and efforts behind the scenes. We have temporarily converted our Poor Boxes (located in the main cathedral) to Parish Offering Boxes, to provide a safe way of giving during this observance of social distancing when visiting the Cathedral to pray. You may also wish to make your parish offering by mail to: Cathedral of Saint Joseph, 140 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, CT 06105, or by pressing the My Parish Offering button below to donate directly to the Cathedral and it's Ministries online.

A Breathtaking ARCHITECTURAL TRIUMPH, INSPIRED BY FAITH
Cathedrals do not just “happen.” On the contrary, they are living monuments of Christian belief and practice, testimonials that summon the best in bishops, clergy, architects, engineers, mathematicians, consummate artists, artisans, meticulous laborers and countless contributors, rich and poor alike. Our Hartford Cathedral is itself a testimonial to faith as well as human genius and artistry. The Cathedral is a repository for some of the most outstanding examples of contemporary ecclesiastical art - in stained glass, mosaics, and sculpture, in both metal and stone.
A Cathedral, like the Cathedral of St. Joseph of Hartford, unquestionably gives us joy, every time we participate in Mass there, every time we visit it, every time we pass by it. -Rev. Msgr. David Q. Liptak |
